Fleetwood late model gas MH owners question

Would anyone with a 2000 or newer Fleetwood gas motor home. That has factory installed 12volt holding tank heaters please tell me where your on off switch is located. Ours has the Ultraheat tank heaters pads on both holding tanks. The fuse panel is clearly marked tank heater. I have looked hi and low and can not find the switch. Fleetwood says that our coach did not have factory equipped tank heaters, but they are clearly there, and it was an option. The previous owner who purchased the coach new did not have them installed, and did not even know they were there. I think the wires were stubbed in somewhere but the switch was never installed. My guess is that the switch should be somewhere near the monitor panel and hot water, water pump switches. Thanks to all in advance for your input.

Carson Trailer?

Been looking around for a small affordable TH. I don't need all the bells and whistles. Been looking at Carson Trailers. Anybody have any experience with them? I know their interiors are a little outdated. I don't need onboard fuel or AC. I'll be using it mostly in the winter so will be putting ultraheat and enclosing the tanks as well as adding a second heater. Mostly the toys will be stored in back of the truck. Trying to stay well under 21ft. Any others i should be looking at besides the TH's at dunesports.com? Good/Bad? How do they hold up?

RE: First trip of the year. I hope.

First thing to freeze will be dump valve and plumbing coming from your tanks. If you are going to camp this early, every year, you should look into electric heat for your tanks and dump lines. I would be concerned about 20 degrees at night and only getting into the 30's during the day, may not be warm enough to thaw what froze the night before. Then second night you get more freezing.

RE: Wiring up heating pads for holding tanks?

uhmm Thanks for the info but I was refering to the heated pads that stick on the bottom of the holding tanks......very low current which alows you to run them on 12v while not plugged in....but charging from the tv. http://www.ultraheat.com/

RE: Heating holding tanks

IMO you can't go wrong with UltraHeat. I installed them on last TT when I got it home. They were still working great when we traded after 7 years. New HTTTH came with heated tanks. Do remember the PIPES may need heating also.

ski house on wheels - your input please (newbie)

Please be easy on me, this is my first post! I have ordered a Phoenix Cruiser 2350 on a Quiqley 4x4 chassis. My slow time is winter, and I love to hike/ski/snowshoe. My hope is to have a "ski chalet on wheels". I'm very concerned that this thing is as usable as a class C can be in the winter. I'm going to the factory later this week with a list of concerns that I think I need addressed, but I felt is was time to put this up on this forum for your educated input. My concerns (that I know of) are plumbing and electrical in nature. Should I heat tape the drainage system - like the macerator pump, valves, etc.? Phoenix heats and insulates the tanks already. Ultraheat makes some heated bits for the pipes - they all seem to be 12V though, and heating everything w/12V seems like a big drain (no pun intended). How about internal valves for the flush lines (Phoenix has them outside by the drain system)? Kermit (Phoenix's owner) says to just put pink stuff in the tanks and lines to keep the valves good - but won't this stuff get uselessly diluted when water and stuff reenters? Electrical - I will have 130 watts of solar, which won't help in really cloudy conditions, but at altitude when the sun shines it's very strong. But what about the (2 deep cycle) batteries with the cold weather - won't they be pretty useless? Am I wrong to think that boondocking in the snowy winter might not be a possibility unless I run the generator frequently (I can't imagine sleeping with it running)? All input is appreciated, 100,000 more questions to follow.......

RE: Heated holding tanks?

Mine has the 'Ultraheat' package. So far, so good. Temps to -2 F and so far no freeze problems.

RE: Frozen Pipe

Steve...UltrHeat DOES NOT MAKE HEAT TAPE LIKE YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT! You might want to consider the power requirements and your application, if you choose to try the UltraHeat pipe heaters: 1.) The smallest pipe heater requires 2.2 A, continuous. That current draw will KILL the average 12 V battery in about two days. And you're going to need more than one to protect your TT. 2.) According to the mfg. info, YOU have to turn it on ONLY when free-air temp drops below 44 degrees. YOU have to turn it off when temp is above 44 degrees. 3.) At 44 degrees, a single 12 V battery in an unheated TT,will only put out about 1/2 it's rated capacity(probably less), and probably won't last one day without being charged. 4.) That means you'll have to be plugged into 110 volt supply 24/7 to keep your battery charged, and you'll have to visit your stored T each time the temp drops below 44 degrees. food for thought... J

RE: Frozen Pipe

Google UltraHeat. Their 12 volt heat tape, specifically made for RV's, should work great to prevent a reoccurance. I think it needs to be like 50 degrees out to apply it though.

RE: Propane tank heating blanket

Maybe you can combine a tank heater from Ultra Heat with a jacket from trickewon's link. They come on at 44°F and turn off at 68°F. They will put a heck of a dent in your 12V battery, so expect to run your generator a lot just to keep the battery up. Don't let yourself git into the situation where you can't start your generator because the battery is dead instead :B You may also want to consider a 120V heater and a jacket for the battery too. Battery capacity goes down a lot in the cold. When your generator is running, it can heat and charge the battery. A blanket combined with the large mass of batteries can hold heat overnight.

RE: Winterized tanks with heat pads on?

Yes, left on by mistake, but only for a short while. Ultraheat is biggest mfgr I think, they say pads on tanks will not hurt to leave on if tanks empty, but don't try it with pads on pipes.

RE: Winter camping - How do you keep waste tanks from freezing?

Here's a URL for Ultra Heat, Inc. which might be your answer. Arnie

RE: cold weather conversion

Check out web site for Ultraheat Inc. Many Flagstaff and Rockwood (Forest River) trailers come from the factory with tank, pipe, and elbow heaters made by Ultraheat. They work very well. Depending on what converter is installed in your trailer, you may need to upgrade the converter to handle the power draw from the heaters.

Rving in below zero temps

Friends and family are going to spend a few days in northern Arizona. We have a 38 ft 5er with a good heater from propane and at least 2 electric heaters. Have reserved a 50 amp hook up. We will have hookup's but my concern is freezing up the water pipes and holding tanks. I have looked into the Ultraheat pads, but a little expensive. I figure I'll need at least 5 pads then what about the connecting pipes. ANY SUGGESTIONS! HELP!!:?

RE: keeping gray and black tanks from freezing...

If you can touch pipes and or tanks, Google Ultraheat for the best solution. No, I do not work for them, never did.

RE: Adding heat pads to waste tanks

I added pads on last trailer. Google Ultraheat. Washed tank bottoms, peeled off paper from pad, stuck on pad. Ok, under half an hour gone. Now wire it up via fuse and switch, hummmm. That took several hours. Worked great for years and still working when traded TT 7 years later. As I recall it needed to be warm to install pads, hope you have a heated location. Ask Ultraheat about minimum apply temps. One more point, if you have long dump pipes between valves and tanks, may need pipe heaters also from same people.

RE: my first travel trailer ???

Make storm windows either using the shrink plastic temporary kits you can find in building supply stores or have plexi-glass cut to fit and a foam seal again from a building supply store and hold them in place with mirror fasteners. I have usedReflectix to line the trunk area and all other hidden storage areas on outside walls including the backs of closets. It's easy to cut to fit and staple or hot glue in place. Your supply and waste tanks are another matter. Not knowing if your trailer is equipped with an enclosed and insulated underbelly or heated tanks, check outUltraheat . For skirting, foam insulation boards glued to some exterior plywood and cut to fit and held in place with stakes (suggest re-bar). And in low temps as you experience, a small heater with a thermostat underneath. JMHO p.s. A bulk propane tank with a connection like THIS.
